Winter Brace for John Traynor
Written by John Traynor

I have been recently targeting a small shallow Cheshire Mere for the winter. This has been thwarted on most occasions due to the weather and the water being frozen. Late last year I started to use SAE Baits Crab & Oyster boilies after hearing good reports about them, and I have managed to keep this bait trickling in, with small amounts on a few spots.

With limited time at my disposal I decided to do a quick overnighter on the mere and got down and set up for 9pm. Two Combi rigs consisting 20lb X-line, 18lb  Korda Supernatural and a size 7 Fox  Arma-Point SCC on the sharp end where set up helicopter style.

These were dispatched on the spots with a 15mm high attract pop-up on the hook and a pva mesh bag of six 14mm Crab & Oyster boilies followed by a scattering of about thirty 18mm's with the throwing stick. The first run came at 2.30am and was more of a stop start gentle plod, and after a short spirited fight I had a twenty pound six ounce Common in the net.

The rod was cast back out and this was followed by another scatter of bait before I got my head back down. My Alarm on my phone went of 6.15am to wake me up in the morning as I had to get home and drive my son to a football match. No sooner had I turned it of I received a savage take on the other rod, and soon an angry Mirror hits the net at bang on twenty pounds.

With a fine winter brace and the fish on the feed I reluctantly had to pack up and make my way home, but I’ll be back on again just as soon as I can.

Thanks…

John Traynor

Well the last eighteen months has been a real roller coaster of a ride for me with family and business issues. Unfortunately the fishing had to go on hold until I was in a better position to come

Just got back from a top 4 day session at Orchid Lakes. We got there Thursday morning to find a relatively quiet lake. We decided on the Middles & New Middles as we knew from the catch reports
